Out of the den they came...

I've been doing some research on wild bunnies lately because of the little nest we discovered right outside our back door. Of course, the kids haven't been able to resist checking in on them every once in awhile (neither have I!). Sela got quite a surprise this weekend when she peeked in the hole and a baby bunny jumped out followed by three more. They just kept coming. We initially thought there were two, maybe 3. They were scared and shaking and it was clear they didn't quite know what to do. We decided to try and put them back in the den. It was easy to catch them but they wouldn't stay in the den. Then I read that at 3 weeks, even though just the size of a tennis ball, they are weaned and ready to be in the wild. As long as they were hopping along and nibbling grass, they were probably ready. We were also happy to find that it is just an old wives tail that if you touch the nest or leave your scent, the mom won't come back. She did come back to these bunnies. We decided to go to church and hope they all found their way back to the den if they weren't ready to be out in the wild. When we came home, Sela checked and they were all four cuddled back up in the den. We decided to leave them alone "for sure" now and let them emerge on their own. Two days later they left the nest for good. What a fun thing to learn first hand about wild baby bunnies.

Ignore Zig and his rabies paranoia in the background :)

My husband is rabies crazy too. How funny! It is amazing we are all still alive. It makes us stronger right? We found a wild bunny nest last year while landscaping but the momma didnt come back. We tried to bottle feed them, but they were too little and didnt make it. Very cute though.
