Now that we have power and the chickens have the extra hours of light they require in the winter, one of the chickens finally laid an egg. The kids (and myself) were truly ecstatic. We all got our boots on and ran out to the coup to eheck it out. Then Sela and Zig cleaned out their laying boxes and put the straw in with hopes of getting the chickens to lay in the proper place. The first egg was pretty small and a bit dirty since the chicken just laid it right in the middle of the floor. Zig had some fake eggs he put in the laying boxes that are supposed to help the chickens learn where to lay. Lo and behold, the next morning, another egg, right next to the fake egg, just like it should be! And today we had our third. It's so much fun to go and open up the little boxes from the outside and see an egg. I love it.
Time to help Sela get going on her marketing plan!

Wahoo! Fresh eggs - that and tomatoes are sooo different fresh than in the store. Don't forget about 101's recipe for egg salad. It is yummy!
the blue one is the fake one. but we will have blue ones...hopefully soon!
Congrads on the first egg. My best friend in high school had chickens in her backyard and I have always wanted some- it will take some convincing Ryan though!
Nina is too funny. We were watching someone being interviewed the other night and they were reading funny quotes from their kids. Both Ryan and I agreed that Nina has had some WAY better quotes!
Amber, chickens are the easiest thing in the world once you have a coup...it doesn't have to be a chicken palace and you can have four chickens and get plenty of eggs for the week. I know now is probably not quite the time, but once you have your little set-up, they are so, so, so easy. I am shocked. You only clean out the coup once every several months and that is also a breeze. And, of course, that part is the man's work so Ryan would happily do it I'm sure ;) They have gloves to keep his hands pretty.
So, keep pushing for the chicks!
